At Chamberlain’s Chocolate Factory & Cafe in Roswell, Georgia, we believe thoughtful chocolate gifts deserve clear information about the chocolate behind them. That includes explaining our suppliers’ cocoa-sourcing programs and being specific about what those programs support.

How does one of our major chocolate suppliers source cocoa?

One of Chamberlain’s major chocolate suppliers participates in the “Made with a Promise” initiative, which uses a mass-balance sourcing approach through Rainforest Alliance-certified farms. Mass balance supports equivalent volumes of sustainably sourced cocoa.

What does mass-balance cocoa sourcing mean?

Mass balance is a volume-based sourcing approach. It supports an equivalent volume of sustainably sourced cocoa, rather than establishing that the cocoa in a particular finished chocolate came exclusively from certified farms. We describe this as sourcing support, not as farm-to-box traceability for each Chamberlain’s product.

What additional information does the Cocoa Promise program provide?

The supplier’s Cocoa Promise program, representing roughly one-third of its cocoa sourcing, provides additional traceability and child-labor monitoring data. That proportion refers to the supplier’s cocoa sourcing, not to the share of cocoa in a particular Chamberlain’s chocolate or gift box.

Child-labor monitoring data is not a guarantee that child labor is absent. We do not use the existence of a monitoring program as a blanket “child-labor-free” claim.

What do these supplier programs mean for Chamberlain’s chocolates?

These programs provide information about one major supplier’s approach to cocoa sourcing. They do not establish that every Chamberlain’s supplier or product participates in the same programs. They also do not mean that Chamberlain’s itself, or every finished product we sell, is Rainforest Alliance-certified.

Supporting equivalent volumes of sustainably sourced cocoa is different from tracing the cocoa in an individual chocolate to a specific farm. Our aim is to explain the sourcing information clearly without overstating what it establishes.
